I don't think the answer is any one thing. I think the trick is to teach every topic in as many styles as possible. I understand things can't be perfect and chances are every student won't be able to pick up the information the same way but at least it gives the opportunity to reach the most students. Chances are though you won't really have an issue with this as you'll be a gym teacher. So in your case I would say both verbally explain the rules and then show how to play and that should do the trick Ms. James.
I agree with Chris. It would be almost impossible in one activity to pin point each child's learning style. But, I do think as the year progresses you will be able to notice, if you pay attention, how students respond do different types of direction and activity.
I think that another piece to this question is time. Taking the time to get to know our students as best we can will help us determine thier individual learning styles.
